A year or so back, a friend of ours ("Bikertrash," USMC) helped bust a phony SEAL calling himself Reverend something-or-other on his phony website. Does anyone remember the a-hole's real name? My webserver gives me a "file not found" on the search list for the list of phonies. Thanks!

There have been several evagelists who used false SEAL claims to bolster their resumes, but the only one that comes to mind at this time is a former riverine guy who was badly burned by a WP grenade (he pulled the pin then managed to drop it and it went off before he could grab/throw it). I think his name was "Dave Roever" (pronounced "Reever") or something like that. I'll have to check my files. He made all sorts of claims about being a SEAL on both his web site and his VHS tapes. After being confronted, he changed the web site to "clarify" his claims of working "WITH" the SEALs... but thousands of those video tapes are still in circulation with his blatant claims included.

I'll search for the name you provided in my files to see if I can find anything... and send you a PM if I do.

[EDIT: Just completed an extensive search of my archive files... and don't have any listings for the name "Sutter". If he was exposed here on SOCNET, that information didn't make it to me as an Investigator with AuthentiSEAL.]

The AuthentiSEAL Wall Of Shame was dropped about 4 months ago due to a lack of personnel to maintain it. At the time it was dropped, there was a backlog of nearly 300 names waiting to be added, with new names being added to that list almost every day. Since the whole thing was being maintained only by volunteers, with no monetary backing, it was not possible to keep it up. Perhaps at some point in the future, if circumstances change, it will be resurrected.

Although I'm not familiar with the case Die Hard mentioned, I visited the web site for "Pastor/Reverend Jim Sutter" http://hometown.aol.com/revjimsutter/. Here's my take on the thing after a quick visual check.

While there are no claims of being a SEAL, or any written references to the SEAL Teams on that page (at this writing), you can scroll all the way to the bottom of the page to see a display of military ribbons and a really poor graphic of the SEAL Trident. The medals represented by the ribbons are Bronze Star, Navy Cross, 4 Purple Hearts, Presidential Unit Citation, and Combat Medal.

There is a quotation presented in close proximity to the display of military ribbons "God bless the men and women of the US military and counterterrorism units." along with an animated .gif American flag.

To those who cannot "read" the ribbons, the combination of ribbons, Trident, flag, and quotation presents a relatively innocent and 'generic' display of support for the US military.

To those who CAN "read" the ribbons, the combination of ribbons, Trident, flag, and quotation carry something of an implication that the person represented by the web site actually "earned" the awards that are displayed.

As I understand it, this man was publicly exposed as a SEAL imposter. In my opinion, the current display on the web page has all the earmarks of a pitiful and pathetic effort to hang onto those claims while leaving nothing for those who exposed him to use against him.

Sorry I couldn't be of greater help, Die Hard. If anyone has any recollection on this particular case, I'd appreciate a PM to fill me in.

I did a web spread on Reverend Jim Sutter exposing him for the fraud he is when he was busy infiltrating and disrupting groups on the Internet. I have sinced removed the pages from my website. If you are interested I will provide you with the information which can all be verified.

Most probably a different 'Reverend,' but this nickname is one of the officer graduates in Class 234 (I will not post his name - it is not Jim Sutter - but you can PM me). He recieved the nickname because of his refusal to curse out loud. This information is straight off of the Discovery DVD.

The fruit salad and the Trident are gone now. All that's left are the Flag and the Marine Corps Memorial.

The AuthentiSEAL organization is an all-SEAL outfit, and the time required to respond to emailed SEAL Imposter inquiries (20-50 per day), pursue/investigate reported claims, and maintain files is literally a more-than-full-time job. When I started working with the group in mid-2001 I quickly went from spending 2 hours per day on my computer to 12-16 hours per day, 7 days per week... all without any sort of compensation. As you can imagine there is a turnover of volunteer investigators as they get burned out from dealing with scumbags in such high volume for such extended periods of time.

Currently the volunteer manpower levels needed to handle all of the inquiries is very low, and the group is taking a much-needed hiatus. Since I am no longer formally involved with the group (I "retired" late last year) I cannot say how long that hiatus will last, nor do I have any inside information regarding expected expansion of the investigator ranks.

Wish I could give you more, but that's all the info I have at present.

I can support Blacksmith's advisory because he and I came onto the AuthentiSEAL Team the same weekend. The 12-16 hour per day is not an exaggeration. The hiatus is in the hands of Administrators outside the authority line of both Blacksmith and I. Therefore, the duration of the hiatus is beyond our estimation.

Thanks Cass and Blacksmith for the info. I thought that maybe if a lack of financial resources was the cause, something could be done to help.
I have a great deal of respect for the work ya'll do, and would be proud to contribute when it ramps back up.
